CPAP Alternatives and Dental Devices
Our Ventura Dentist Can Help Find the Fit for You
Some people who have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea—a condition that causes the tissues in your throat to block your airway while you sleep—cannot tolerate the CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) device enough to get a good night’s sleep. Complaints of discomfort, dry mouth, nasal congestion, skin irritation, and nightmares due to the CPAP have many people searching for alternative solutions. At Mark Weitzman D.D.S., we can provide information and suggestions about which is the best solution for you.

About Alternative Dental Devices
When it comes to handling obstructive sleep apnea, there are two other main dental devices available to you: the mandibular advancement device and Tongue retaining device. These two devices are FDA approved and widely accepted by sleepers everywhere.
Even though these devices are used for the same thing, they differ immensely:
- The mandibular advancement device (MAD) is a mouth guard that resembles one that is used in sports for protection. The MAD pushes the jaw forward, holding the collapsible part of the throat open so you can breathe easily as you sleep.
- The tongue retaining device (TRD) holds the tongue forward like the MAD does, but instead of controlling the jaw, it directly holds the tongue forward, as if in a splint. The TRD takes a longer time to get used to and is often considered less comfortable than the MAD.
Dental devices have shown to control sleep apnea as a long term solution, unlike some standard surgical procedures, like uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP).

I recently went to Dr. Mark for a broken molar repair. Upon arrival I was impressed with the updated office and it's sterile feel. Dr. Mark took my impressions and decided what to do for the repair. The procedure was efficient, painless, and the tooth repair turned out absolutely perfect! Dr. Mark is a very nice guy and easy to talk to as well which makes the whole process even better! I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a great dentist.

Dr. Weitzman is by far the best dentist I've ever been to! He made my nine-year-old daughter feel safe and comfortable! Not only is he so knowledgeable at his profession, he has a great manner with children. After we left our visit, my daughter was saying how happy she was that he is her dentist. We will never go to another dentist!

This was my first appointment with Dr. Weitzman. Not only did he take time to see me and explain to me why I needed the treatment but the staff also were very knowledgeable and friendly. First time going to the dentist and being happy that I did! I would and I am recommending to my friends and family.

Hi Mark, your hygienist is great. VERY good bedside manner; was sensitive to my sensitivities with regard to those hook things" she uses to scrape plaque. Let's get together over this implant issue. No hurry, and sooner the better, huh? Would you ask someone there to email me an estimate for the work still to be done, please. We're in our "slow" time, and Vic is asking that we pay some meager attention to budgeting, so...Thanks, and have a great vacation.
