Reasons to Remove Teeth

Sometimes it is necessary to get teeth pulled in order to prepare for orthodontic treatment. For example, if your teeth are crowding your mouth, it may not be possible to straighten out the teeth without first making room by performing an extraction. Periodontal disease can also lead to infection of the tissue and bone surrounding and supporting the teeth, thus causing loose teeth, which eventually need to be extracted. In addition, if your mouth is too crowded, a tooth may not be able to break through the gums on its own, which may require extraction as well.

Tooth decay and damage can also lead to a tooth removal. This is because if the decay or damage reaches the pulp, an infection may occur. The pulp is the center of the tooth that contains the nerves and blood vessels. If the infection gets so bad that it cannot be corrected with root canal therapy or antibiotics, an extraction may be necessary to prevent further spread of infection.

During & After the Extraction Process

While tooth extraction may sound intimidating, there are precautions nowadays that make the process a fairly simple one to perform. To begin the process, you will receive an injection of a local anesthetic to numb the location of the tooth. If your procedure involves more than one tooth being extracted, a strong general anesthetic may be used in order to prevent pain throughout your body and help you sleep through the process.

Once the tooth has been removed, you may need stitches. Some stitches will dissolve over time, and others will have to be removed after a few days.

In order to avoid the spreading of infection or more serious problems, it is beneficial to schedule your tooth extraction as soon as possible. After your procedure, it is important to stop using all tobacco products, because tobacco can delay the healing process and reduce your ability to fight infection. Smoking can also loosen or dislodge the blood clot that is needed for the healing process.
