Gum Disease: Causes & Treatments
Gum recession is caused by: periodontal (gum) disease, sports injuries, genetics, tobacco use, crooked teeth, hormones, improperly fitted dentures, and aggressive tooth brushing. Gum recession can cause the root to be exposed, causing sensitivity to hot and cold; exposed tooth roots increase the risk of tooth decay.
Treatments Depend on the Cause
- Aggressive tooth brushing: If the recession was caused by brushing too hard, we can show you a better method for cleaning your teeth.
- Periodontal disease: With periodontal disease, treatment involves scaling and root planning, which is a process that removes plaque and tartar buildup.
- Advanced gum recession: With advanced gum recession, a gum graft may be necessary. With a gum graft, a thin piece of gum tissue is carefully removed from another part of the mouth and is attached to the area where the gums have receded. A graft improves the appearance of the gums, it alleviates sensitivity, and protects teeth from decay.
